We have just one word for you this classical-music season: Shostakovich.

Next year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich, whose large opus includes music for symphony, opera, dance, chamber music and films. Shostakovich wrote tonal music coloured by an expressive use of dissonance and, although he is treasured in musical capitals around the world, his work was performed rarely in Austin.

Until now.

In January, Austin Lyric Opera presents a new production of "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk" at Bass Concert Hall starring opera great Carol Vaness as Katerina Ismailova. And the Austin Symphony presents Shostakovich's Scherzo, Opus 1 and the First Violin Concerto with guest soloist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg. That's just the tip of the taiga. Stay tuned to www.shostakovich100.org for updates and developing programs.

It's not all Shostakovich this season, but don't miss this opportunity to add the Russian master to your musical vocabulary.
