April 28, 2005 Award-winning Tucson, Ariz.-based architect Rick Joy has been selected to design a $5 million chapel on the St. Edward's University campus. The chapel will house a 400-person sanctuary along with the offices of Campus Ministry and the Holy Cross Institute. The university already has received a $1 million lead gift from alumnus Charles Kolodzey, class of '36. In addition, the university has received a $50,000 planning grant from the Scanlan Foundation of Houston. The chapel will be just south of the university's Mary Moody Northen Theatre. The new building is just part of a master plan that will add as many as a dozen buildings to the hilltop campus and help accommodate the institution's plans to double enrollment. For nearly 60 years, a modest wood-frame chapel has served the university.
The winner of the 2004 National Design Award in Architecture from the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, Joy is known for his subtle and modern approach, particularly with his many projects in the desert Southwest. "His innate use of nature, light, space and sensory experience will enable us to collaboratively create a chapel to serve the needs of campus," said Father Rick Wilkinson, director of Campus Ministry and a member of the selection committee. -- Jeanne Claire van Ryzin
