July “sweeps” numbers are in and – you guessed it – KVUE and KXAN are yet again home to Austin’s most-watched newscasts.

ABC affiliate KVUE has the No. 1 morning, midday and 10 p.m. newscasts, while NBC affiliate KXAN has bragging rights at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., according to the latest data from Nielsen.

Ratings during July and three other sweeps periods – February, May and November – are considered especially important in the TV business because they’re used to set advertising rates.

Mornings remain an especially lucrative time of day, with newscasts on all of Austin’s TV stations continuing to see year-over-year increases – something that’s been the case for most of 2014.

The newest entrant in the jam-packed morning news battle is CBS affiliate KEYE’s 4:30 a.m. newscast which, after just a month on the air, managed to tie KXAN in July.

Fox-owned KTBC’s 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. newscasts, meanwhile, are beating some of the network morning shows, including “CBS This Morning.”

At 9 a.m., KEYE’s new “We Are Austin” lifestyle program managed to do better than “The 700 Club,” the show it replaced.

Middays, KVUE’s 11 a.m. newscast scored a higher rating than the noon broadcasts on KXAN and KTBC.

The margin of victory at 5 p.m. is substantial, with KXAN grabbing almost as many viewers as second place KVUE and third place KTBC combined.

KXAN comes out on top at 6 p.m., as well.

"We keep focusing on providing our viewers with the best in investigative journalism and in-depth storytelling because when we listen to our viewers, that's what they tell us they want,” KXAN president and general manager Eric Lassberg said. “So we’re extremely excited with all the newscast growth we experienced in July and being the No. 1 station in the market overall."

KTBC nearly triples KNVA’s audience at 9 p.m., while KVUE is the clear winner at 10 p.m.

“KVUE remains committed to providing Central Texans with news and information they need and expect from us,” KVUE president and general manager Patti Smith said. “Our commitment to investigative journalism is stronger than ever. Our commitment to Williamson and Hays counties is stronger than ever with the addition of bureau-specific reporters. Our commitment to our border coverage is stronger than ever, with reporting and specials from the only station in the market with a dedicated border bureau. Our commitment to political reporting is stronger than ever, with the addition of quarterly specials and a focus on the upcoming November elections. KVUE is committed to earning the trust of our viewers, each and every day.”

Austin is currently the country’s 40th largest TV market, according to Nielsen, with 733,390 households. New rankings are due out soon.

July Nielsen ratings

Each ratings point equals 7,334 Central Texas households. The first number is ratings points, the second is share (the percentage of in-use TV sets tuned to a particular channel) and the third is total households.
