East Side King opens at Cheer Up Charlies Wednesday

East Side King
East Side King expands to the Red River District today

By Matthew Odam

East Side King expands to the Red River District today, as it officially opens a food truck at 900 Red River St. at Cheer Up Charlies, a bar and performance venue that has become a centerpiece of Austin's LGBT community. The track will operate daily from 5 p.m. to 1:45 a.m., serving an assortment of hot dogs and sandwiches not found at other ESK locations.

Offerings include a Moto dog ($6.50), a Berkshire hot dog topped with bonito; a fried fish sandwich with crispy panang curry ($7.50); a fried shrimp ($9) and beef pho po-boys ($9), as well as ESK staples like beet home fries ($7) and Brussels sprouts salad ($7).

This is the third truck location (joining East Sixth Street spots at Liberty and Wonderland, which is in the old Cheer Up Charlies), and there are brick-and-mortar locations of the operation co-founded by former Uchi and Uchiko chefs Paul Qui and Moto Utsunomiya at Hole in the Wall and on South Lamar Boulevard.
