Austin Food & Wine Alliance announce the Great Austin Food Race

By Matthew Odam

The inaugural Great Austin Food Race will take to the streets of East Austin on May 14. The scavenger hunt will pit teams against each other, as they test their tasting skills and local knowledge in a three-hour race. The event, which will feature culinary challenged at more than a dozen East Austin food and drink hot spots, benefits the Austin Food & Wine Alliance’s Culinary Grant Program.

The race will be limited to 30 four-person teams, and groups from Whole Foods Market, T3, Bread & Butter PR, and Treaty Oak Distilling Company have already thrown their hats into the ring. Registration costs $500 per team and is tax deductible. Since 2012, the AFWA has awarded $45,000 in grants to fund innovative local culinary projects.

“We’re excited to host this new engaging event that allows us to continue to highlight those that are truly making Austin a hot spot of culinary innovations,” Mariam Parker, executive director of the AFWA, said. “We expect this to be an annual event that each year will feature a different area of Austin known for great food and drink.”

There will be an after-party following the race at the Getaway Motor Club. For registration information and more details on the race, visit austinfoodwinealliance.org.
