Farmers have to be creative by nature.
They are constantly having to conjure up solutions to problems that their Farm University textbooks didn't address, but beyond that, many farmers spend time thinking about structure, composition, color and texture for their own artistic endeavors, from writing to painting.
For the second year, Prizer Gallery, 2023 E. Cesar Chavez St., is hosting a Farmer as Artist event to celebrate the artistry of more than 20 local farmers, including Larry Butler and Carol Ann Sayle of Boggy Creek Farm, Brenton Johnson of Johnson's Backyard Garden, Erin Flynn and Skip Connett of Green Gate Farms, Max Elliott of Urban Roots, Marissa Lankes of Farmshare Austin and Germaine Swenson of Munkebo Farm.
After a successful first exhibit last year, Prizer has decided to make this an annual event to examine the link between creativity and farming. This year's reception will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday at the gallery, where many of the farmers will be on hand to discuss their work.
Proceeds from the art sales will benefit Farmshare Austin, a local farmer education nonprofit.
