Events: Cooking Up Cultures' Global Soup, Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale

Casey Smith and Gail Totten have started a series of cooking classes designed to teach English to non-native speakers called Cooking Up English through the University United Methodist Church on the UT campus. Cooking Up English just added Spanish classes.

On Sunday, vegan bakers will host a fundraiser at Wheatsville Food Co-op on South Lamar Boulevard as part of the Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale.

Cooking Up Cultures, the nonprofit that teaches language and culture through cooking classes (we wrote about them back in 2011 when they launched), is hosting its monthly Global Soup from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at In.gredients on 2610 Manor Road. Tickets ($6 online or $10 at the door, $5 for students, for the BYOB (that’s bring your own bowl) dinner include Sopa de Frijol y Chile Pasilla Oaxaqueño, a black bean soup with Oaxacan pasillas and crema mexicana, live music and multi-lingual conversation. Drinks and desserts will be sold inside In.gredients. Proceeds will go to Cooking Up Cultures’ expanding line of classes, which now include English, Spanish and Arabic.

Also on Sunday, a conglomerate of vegan bakeries, bloggers and enthusiasts are taking part in the weeklong Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Wheatsville Food Co-op, 4001 S. Lamar Blvd. (Some of the baked goods will also be gluten-free.) All proceeds will go to benefit Austin Pets Alive.
