Summertime doesn't have to be the season of light wheat beers.

Starting at 6 p.m. tonight at Banger's on Rainey Street, Austinites can get the first taste of Revolver Brewing's new barrel-aged beer, Fracker Barrel One. It's the brewery's 2012 Mother's Little Fracker, a porter, that was aged for one year in syrah barrels from a Dallas-Fort Worth area winery.

Brewmaster Grant Wood said that Fracker Barrel One, Revolver's first barrel-aged brew, was also blended with some 2013 Mother's Little Fracker to balance out the flavors of the barrel. The result has already been positive in DFW, where Revolver is based, and he hopes Central Texans similarly embrace it.

"Barrel aging is a little like magic," Wood said. "You can put a beer in there that’s kind of interesting, and then if things go well, it really multiplies the complexity of the beer."

But he didn't want just any barrel to age the beer in. He's noticed the multitude of beers that have gotten their rich flavors from bourbon barrels and wanted to try something a little different.

"Stouts have kind of a red wine element to them anyway," he said. "So I thought it would be good synergy to put the stout with the red wine and have it gain some of the drier wood notes, as well as a little bit of the fruitiness of the grape. That'll produce a very balanced beer."

That balance is something he's noticed Revolver fans are already saying about Fracker Barrel One. You'll catch the dark malty notes of the porter up front, followed by a red wine aroma and a neat, crisp finish.

Austinites can get a pint of the beer tonight at Banger's along with others in the Revolver repertoire, including Blood and Honey (which I recommended as one of my favorite brews to drink during scorching summer days), Revolver Bock and High Brass, all mainstays. In a couple weeks, Sidewinder, a pale ale with regional flavors like agave nectar brewed into it, will also be released.
