Mezcal is such a beautiful spirit. The smoky, bold cousin of tequila has long captivated my attention, and over the past few years more bars around Austin have started to take it seriously as well. This month's issue of Real Magazine features 5 recommended bars for Mezcal.

Takoba and the adjacent Cantina El Milamores were  listed in the story because they have the best variety of mezcal around, and pay the most attention to making sure customers get properly educated on its history. I interviewed General Manager Peter Ponce to hear more about why they chose to feature the spirit so prominently on their menu. Check out the video above to hear his thoughts on mezcal, and the proper way to drink it.

Want to try several brands without breaking the bank? Takoba's annual Mezcal Festival will take place this month, from 4 to 7 p.m. on October 19. There will be 11 brands of mezcal, featuring 35 different varieties to taste. This year, the event is free to the public.
