Circle Brewing takes over taps at Craft Pride with three Envy Amber variations

This Saturday, Circle Brewing will take over the taps at Craft Pride on Rainey Street this Saturday. Starting at 5 p.m., three different versions of the brewery's Envy Amber will be tapped -- one carbonated regularly, one on nitro, and one cask version. 

There's always a lot of chatter surrounding how different methods of carbonation affect beer, but in my experience, the chances to try a single beer served all three ways in one sitting can be rare. I thought it was a great idea, so I caught up with Circle President/Founder Ben Sable, to see what he had to say about the concept.  

"After we decided to put the ENVY on nitro, we thought it would be fascinating to not only have the normally carbonated ENVY on alongside the Nitro version, but also have a cask of ENVY as well.  That way, people can taste the beer from a variety of different angles," he said. "Having the opportunity to experiment with this brew and specifically target some of its complex and varied flavors and aromas in this ENVY Tap Takeover was crazy fun for us."

For those of you not familiar with the terms, serving a beer "on nitro" means the beer was carbonated using a mixture of both nitrogen and C02, whereas most beers are typically just carbonated using C02. This addition of nitrogen gas makes the beer taste heavier and creamier (like Guinness, if you will).  With Envy, Sable says the nitro will "really bring out its malty backbone, allowing those dried fruit notes to roll off the resulting change in body."

As for cask beer, you can read my full report on the style in this story, but in a nutshell, it’s unfiltered and unpasteurized beer that is naturally carbonated in the vessel from which it is served, instead of being injected with C02. Sable says "Our casks are typically dry hopped, which minimizes the malt tones in place of aromatics, but having that complexity in the background always makes for a great mix, especially with a cask conditioned brew."

Haven't tried the Envy before? Sable describes it as "our most balanced and complex beer year round brew, having a soft hoppy character rounded by a solidly malt foundation.  The caramel notes really play with the English Ale yeast's fruity esters, and this creates a balanced brew that has a prominent body that isn't too filling without sacrificing flavor in the process.  All this with a sessionable 4.8% ABV, we really spent some time perfecting this recipe."

If Envy isn't your thing, Wryteous and Hop Overboard will also be on tap during the event.
