Ubooly is a $30 stuffed toy that works with an iPod or iPhone, inserted into the toy, to play educational interactive games. Green and pink versions are in the works as is an app for Android devices.

Back-to-school tech gift guide

By Omar L. Gallaga

In today's print edition of the Austin American-Statesman and on, you'll find my annual back-to-school tech gift guide, full of gadgets and tools for young kids as well as students hitting high school or even college.

In a bit of a departure from past gift guides, I talk a bit about school supplies, disappointment and dead ducks. All will make sense once you've read it.

This year, we're seeing a lot more tablets geared toward kids (just today, I see that there's a new Samsung Galaxy tablet specifically designed for children), more smart toys and apps built by educators and of course tons of smart phone and tablet accessories. What we're not seeing a lot of is PCs (desktops or tablets) offering much new or different for students. Sure, there are lots of new models out there, but it's hard to get excited about Windows 8 or even Mac OS at this point when there's so much on offer in mobile devices. It'll be interesting to see if that continues through the holiday season.

You can also find the gift guide here, but the formatting is a little wonky.
