360 Summer Mixtape: Magna Carda's Megz Kelli

Austin360 music shows, April 18 - April 24
Magna Carda

By Deborah Sengupta Stith

As the mercury rises, the streets start to sizzle and the city settles into a slightly slower groove, we present the 360 Summer Mixtape. Each week we'll check in with a different figure in the Austin music scene for summery song selections and pro tips on keeping it cool through the hot months ahead.

Track selector:  Megz Kelli

Band:  Magna Carda

Next gig:  August 4 - Girls Rock Camp. Dougie and I are already locking in the next project, so we'll be busy with that until then! Can't wait to jam out for the Girls.

Favorite cold drink: Sweet Tea - I'm a fiend for it. If you're feeling adventurous, go ahead and pour up some Deep Eddy's Sweet Tea Vodka to spice that night up.

Best way to cool off (that’s not Barton Springs): Catching a movie is pretty much the best way to cool off, in my opinion at least. It's always cold and you can beat the Alamo Drafthouse crowds if you catch an early showing. This Summer has been on a roll with non-stop awesome movies though.

Summer show you’re psyched about: Unfortunately I had to miss this, but I was psyched about the Jose James show at Empire Control Room. I started listening to his stuff not long ago, but I've seen some crazy youtube videos of his super incredible bassist (Soloman Dorsey) singing while soloing and Chris Bowers on the keys. I always love it when an artist plays for the first time in a different city, and Austin always knows how to show love. I heard it was an insane show, so maybe he'll come back for a 2nd show soon!

SONGS FOR SUMMER:

Maxwell - "Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder)" - Even though "BLACKSummer's Night" is my favorite album, Maxwell's "Urban Hang Suite" has the classic tune "Ascension". This is one of those Summer tunes where you drive an extra block or two just to finish the song. If this bass line doesn't make you move, there's something wrong with you. Even when I-35 is packed, traffic moves a little faster with this track.

Jose James "U R The 1" - I've always been a big fan of that syncopated J.Dilla type drum feel on songs, especially when it's someone singing over it. Jose James hit this track on point off his new album "While You Were Sleeping", combining that syncopation with dope vocals and the perfect background synths.  This is one of those tracks that you just have to jam to start off a good outdoor summer night party!

Erykah Badu -"Cleva" - Erykah Badu will always be a genius to me and my personal favorite artist. This track's off her Mama's Gun album back from 2000, but it'll always be a goodie and a must for the summer playlists. After a long Friday and Saturday, throw this Sunday summer vibe on the speakers to help with the weekend recovery.
