It's coming: For a glorious six-day stretch starting March 11, the music world will have all eyes and ears on the South By Southwest Music Festival in Austin. Leading up to the festival, we will be profiling a different artist each day.

About the band

Irrepressibly cheerful folk-poppers The Mowgli's  made quite the splash at the 2013 ACL Festival — literally. When the last day of the fest was canceled due after heavy rains turned Zilker Park into a brand-new fifth ocean, the Southern California eight-piece refused to let the music die. Their pop-up show in a downtown parking lot near the Austin Resource Center for the Homeless helped music fans forget about their soggy woes. Austin360 correspondent Erin J. Walter wrote that the show "looked like a '60s sit-in and felt like a love fest."

That jangly, feel-good vibe is what The Mowgli's are about, something that you would already know if you've heard their infectious single "San Francisco." In fact, the size of the band — eight members total — means that making music turns into one big hippie commune team effort. In an ACL Festival interview with the Statesman's Nancy Flores, The Mowgli's spoke about their creative chemistry:

Q: How do you make sure the sound is cohesive with eight of you in the band, all with different musical styles and influences?

Colin Louis Dieden (vocals/guitar/percussion): That’s a tough question. I don’t think it’s about making it cohesive necessarily. We all push each other to want to be better on our own, and because of the talent that surrounds us we make better music.

Katie Jayne Earl (vocals/percussion): Having so many members also gives us the opportunity to learn when someone should take the spotlight or step back.

Fans may recall that The Mowgli's came to town for SXSW 2013. Their full-length release from last year, "Waiting For The Dawn," gives an accurate impression of what new audiences can expect: nu-Bohemian flavors sprinkled on top of an upbeat power pop garden of delights.

Could share a bill with: Family of the Year, Thao and the Get Down Stay Down, Wild Child, The Polyphonic Spree
