Dilated Peoples
Dilated Peoples

By Deborah Sengupta Stith

The lineup for September's inaugural Weird City Hip Hop Festival keeps getting sweeter. L.A. Underground lifers Dilated Peoples who just dropped a solid new full length "Directors of Photography" on Rhymesayers' label add a little more heft for late nineties backpackers specifically and all lovers of real hip hop in general. The most striking thing about the new album is its committment to hip hop authenticity. In an era where so much of the form has been reduced to auto-tuned booty club hooks, it's incredibly refreshing to hear an album that showcases incredible turntablism from DJ Babu paired with intelligent rhymes from rappers Rakaa and Evidence.

Also added to the bill is a killer showcase of Texas talent curated by Pushermania's Matt Sonzala. Mixtape master Doughbeezy, the self-proclaimed South East Beast and one of the biggest breakout artists to come out of Houston in the past couple years leads a lineup that also includes excellent Dallas artists  AD.d+ and emerging San Antonio superstar Worldwide. League of Extraordinary Gz, SubKulture Patriots, Lil Sicc and Sertified will all represent for the ATX on the bill.

In addition the festival has added new voices from the Stones Throw camp Homeboy Sandman and Jonwayne to the bill and there will also be a pair of Grind Time Now battle league nights.

These artists join a bill that already featured a solid roster including Jean Grae, Pharoahe Monch and a Body Rock party featuring Dam Funk.
