Brownout will play Thursday at the Mohawk.

Brownout presents Brown Sabbath at the Mohawk Outdoor. Launched a decade ago as a Grupo Fantasma side project, Brownout is best known as a hard funking instrumental powerhouse reminiscent of the J.B.s, soul legend James Brown’s backing band. But the musical collective with roots in Laredo draws influence from a broad range of sources. Last September the band did a four-week residency at Frank that found them exploring a different style of music weekly. For the finale the band performied as Brown Sabbath, a Black Sabbath tribute band. This year they’ve taken the show on the road. They played a Brooklyn Bowl show promising “funk interpretations of Black Sabbath” last month and they have a slate of gigs in Texas and Colorado described as a “tribute to the original masters of reality” on the books for this month. 8 p.m. $15. 912 Red River St. mohawkaustin.com. — Deborah Sengupta Stith

Also: Local rockers White Denim, fresh off their “Jimmy Kimmel Live” appearance, plays the outdoor stage at Stubb’s with openers Cass McCombs and the Bottom Dollar String Band, plus Emily Wolfe on the indoor stage afterward. ... Soulful blues singer Miss Lavelle White is at the Saxon Pub. ... North Carolina band Southern Culture on the Skids continues its five-day run at the Continental Club, with Marti Brom opening. … Roots-rocker Mark Jungers is at Hole in the Wall.

UPDATE: This blog entry has been updated to correct the show time. The show starts at 8 p.m. not 9 p.m. as previously reported.
