To those of us complaining about how strange it is to have a nearly identical three-day music festival on successive weekends in Austin, it looks like Week 2 could have one big difference. Weather reports have a good chance of light rain falling on Zilker on Saturday and Sunday. Last week's desperate scalpers, whose kids are now attending public school, would be wise to switch careers to rain gear salesmen.
It also rained pretty good at one point during last weekend’s fest, but fortunately that was at 3:30 a.m. on Sunday. The sun came up shining and dried most of the fields, while inadvertently melting Foxygen.
I asked C3’s logistical brain Charlie Jones what they would’ve done if the rain didn’t stop and he said they would’ve spread hay all over the grounds. And pray to Yoda that it doesn’t turn into 2009 again. You’ll recall the year of the mud, when some of the crowd rolled around in the muck like it was Woodstock, then spent the next week in the shower when they found out how “Dillo Dirt” was made.
That was new turf in 2009 and it held, although lots of brown stuff oozed up from the ground. The turf is much stronger now, so the hope is that, even with a deluge during the Cure, the worst to happen would be running black hair dye.
At any rate, the big winners in a rainy fest will be the acts booked to play the Zilker Tent Stage. Even Romeo Rose’s blues band would pack the place if they were booked.
