Here are a couple local hip-hop videos that came out last month and are totally worth a spin.
First, Crew54's "Labor." These dudes are the real deal, a pair of Killeen-based emcees who put in serious time on the Austin hip-hop scene. In addition to blazing stages with their soul-soaked hip-hop, they've spent the last several years documenting the local scene with their 54 Reality Show. Also, it turns out, like most of us, they go to work. In this video, we find our rapper heroes in white collar hell, sending up "Office Space" as they slyly eskew the glamorized "druggin' and thuggin'" mystique of the hip-hop lifestyle. You can read more about the making of the video here.
Next up is a fresh new crew "Magna Carda" comprised of current UT and St. Eds students and recent grads. I like what they've got going on with the lush Lana Del Ray-esque vocals by Olivia Applegate (who you might recognize from 'America's Got Talent') juxtaposed against the so fresh and so clean snappy flow from 20-yr-old emcee Megan Tillman a.k.a. Megz Kelli. The band has been playing together since January 13 and on this track they sound tight with a nice easy groove going. Aside from the (SPOILER ALERT) weird and unnecessary black widow turn the video takes at the end this feels like an excellent debut from a crew that is now officially on my radar.
