Ethan Hawke's Black Album in "Boyhood"

By Joe Gross

(This blog entry contains extremely minor spoilers for "Boyhood." Just deal, OK? You're an adult.)

It is fairly well known that about halfway or so through "Boyhood," Ethan Hawke's character, Mason, Sr., gives his son, Mason, Jr. (Austinite Ellar Coltrane) an anthology he made called "The Black Album," a collection of songs from each of the Beatles' solo careers.

This is not a new idea. There have been bootlegs called Black Album before that are not compilations of solo material. Fans have been making their own such mixes since, well, probably the mid-70s or so. But this is the internet age, so there is therefore debate.

Here are the liner notes Hawke wrote for the CD, with a track listing. Here is a place that might have some high quality complaining the future. Here are the songs, more or less..

So, yes to "Real Love" and no to "Cold Turkey?" Hmmm....
