'Sound and Cinema'

By Charles Ealy

American-Statesman staff

The Alamo Drafthouse and Do512 are sponsoring a new summer series called “Sound & Cinema: Music and Movies on the Lawn,” which will run on alternating Wednesdays through Aug. 21.

The series will pair live music with popular films, and bands will perform a tribute to the movie, followed by a screening on the Alamo’s giant inflatable outdoor screen, all from the Long Center City Terrace, 701 W. Riverside Drive.

The events are free and open to the public. Aquasana, the Austin-based makers of home water filtration systems, is sponsoring the series.

Upcoming events:

June 19: “Smokey and the Bandit,” featuring songs about the road from Whiskey Shivers.

July 17: “Back to the Future,” featuring live music by Hello Wheels.

July 31: “School of Rock,” featuring the Zeppelin Show performed by Will Taylor & Strings Attached.

Aug 14: “Flash Gordon” (1980) featuring live music with Magnifico, a Queen cover band.

Food trailers will be on site. The Long Center will sell beer, wine, cocktails and nonalcoholic beverages. Guests may bring nonalcoholic drinks or food to picnic on the lawn.

The food trailers will be open by 7 p.m., and the concerts will begin at 8 p.m. each evening. The movie screenings will follow.
