Nod (Josh Hutcherson) discovers what it takes to be a true hero in ‘Epic.’

‘Epic’ isn’t, but it’s full of fun and action

“Epic,” the new animated film from Fox Animation’s Blue Sky Studios (“Ice Age,” “Rio”) was almost a Pixar project. On one hand, you have to wonder how much better it would be had that happened. “Epic” is a good, solid effort, but it’s missing the emotional element so effective in ...

Michael Douglas, left, portrays Liberace and Matt Damon portrays Scott Thorson in “Behind the Candelabra,” premiering Sunday on HBO.

Roe: A few new series arrive for summer

New summer programming — including sitcoms, procedurals and reality competitions — arrives as fall and mid-season schedules continue to wind down. Most of the finales are seasonal only — these shows will return at some point (unless they’re labeled as series finales, in which case they’re gone for good). Here’s ...

The cover of “Someone Could Get Hurt: A memoir of Twenty-First-Century Parenthood” by author Drew Magary.

Best bets, May 19

The last time Drew Magary came through Austin on a book-signing tour, he appeared at Black Sheep Lodge. “We all crowded into the back, but there were these two rednecks playing pool. A friend of mine heard them saying, ‘This ain’t a damned library,’” he remembers, laughing. The crowd at Book ...

Author Gwen Cooper chills with a cat, Gizmo, at a book-reading and -signing. Cooper is doing a book tour through animal shelters, including a stop Saturday at Austin Pets Alive.

Best bets, May 17

Gwen Cooper has written two books about cats and owns three of the critters, one of them blind and another with just three legs — she calls that one her “tripod.”“When the cat with three legs and the cat with no eyes get into a fight, it’s the world’s saddest ...

Dancers from Austin strut their stuff as auditions begin on the season premiere of “So You Think You Can Dance,” Tuesday on Fox.

Roe: ‘The Office’ shuts its doors this week

Remember last week when I said there were a lot of season finales? Well, install a seatbelt on your sofa, grab some snacks and beverages and lock in. There’s little space for wisecracks — here’s what to watch and what to avoid on television this week: Monday: “How I Met ...

‘Gatsby’ spectacular but not so great

Let’s start out by agreeing that I’m long since past high school, and this is not a book report. Anyway, those viewers who head to the cineplex to see “The Great Gatsby” expecting to see a literary — much less literal — retelling of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s great American novel ...

“Dad is Fat,” $25 from Crown Publishing, lands on bookstore shelves Tuesday.

Gaffigan’s ‘Dad is Fat’ packed with dark parental humor

The night my wife and I brought our prematurely born daughter home from the hospital in 1998, I fell asleep with the baby in my arms. In a recliner. In suburban Chicago mid-March. In a poorly heated family room addition to our house. When I woke up, freezing, she was ...

Chris O’Dowd stars as a young man looking into his family’s past in director Christopher Guest’s new half-hour mockumentary, “Family Tree.” The partially improvised sitcom premieres at 9:30 p.m. Sunday on HBO.

Roe: Many of your favorite shows end their seasons this week

Just about every fall program that hasn’t yet ended concludes in the next seven days, so hurry and finish everything on your DVR so you’re all caught up. Here’s what to watch and what to avoid on television this week: Monday: “Rihanna 777,” 7 p.m., Fox: Seven gigs; seven days; ...

Think the commercials on your TV are still too loud? You may be able to do something about it.

Roe: Loud commercials still generate small volume of complaints

Who says television watching is a passive exercise? I am constantly reaching for my remote and adjusting the volume (or, let’s face it, hitting the mute button) every time a commercial comes on. The volume on those late night ads for injury lawyers seems almost loud enough that I’m tempted ...

Dillo Dirt jam features first-time funsters

“Pfft. I could do that.” Five locals who have never performed standup comedy before decided to put their punchlines where their mouths are, resulting in the second “Dillo Dirt Comedy Jam,” 9 p.m. May 11 at the New Movement Theater, 616 Lavaca St. (doors open at 8:30 p.m.). “Everybody knows ...
