‘Beauty and the Beast,’ a tale of a girl’s first musical

I took 4-year-old Ava to see her first musical on Saturday. The Zilker Summer Musical was a perfect way to introduce musical theater to her. She loved seeing the crew get ready before the show. She watched the orchestra tune up. She saw the lighting crew scale the tower above us. She liked watching the prop masters test out the father’s invention.

Then the musical started and there was lots of smiles, laughing and clapping on her part. It was all too much for her. Halfway through the second act, she could fight sleep no longer.

The next morning, she urgently announced that she had to go back. She didn’t get to see the beast turn into a prince, after all.

I think we will return later this summer and maybe a nap beforehand will be encouraged.

‘Beauty and the Beast’ runs 8:30 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays (but not July 4) through Aug. 9 at the Zilker Hillside Theater. Admission is free. Parking is $3.
