Email to a FriendIf you want to take a break from typical Tex-Mex, head to Evita's. Start with the salsas -- four very hot ones that included black bean chipotle, garlic red, lime-based tomatillo and roasted pepper, and one moderate, the fresh tomato and cilantro. Then step up to the next level with entrees such as the jalapeņo-stuffed, bacon-wrapped shrimp served in chipotle sauce. Forks up. Cheap. Dale Rice, AA-S

August 7th, 2008 I belong to a men's supper club and we have been eating out ( once /month), for ten years.....I choose where we go and on August 6th, we went to Botanita's. I had made reservations earlier and when we arrived, the tables were set up..water was in place and the chips and salsa were in place as well. The chips were warm and better than most and the different kinds of salsa were varied and almost perfect in their appearance and taste....Our waitress, Dee, explained what each one was and a small bowl of fresh escobeche was available too. Beer was ordered and when I requested a cold glass with extra limes, Dee brought it right out..when I ordered another beer, ....without me asking, she brought another cold glass. There were five of us and we all had questions about different entrees,,,,Dee described the dishes accurately ......When we placed our orders, agin, without asking, she brought out extra chips and four more different salsas for us to sample..these were warm. Our entrees were varied, and all were excellent.....especially those that had a mole sauce ( this mole sauce was as good as any I have ever had in over 40 years of eating out )....I could say more, because the entire evening was an evening to remember, but I will just end with this.....this restaurant is small, and hard to find...it's a neighborhood type place..it's clean, comfortable...service with a smile, and a menu that represents the type of food you would find in the interior of Mexico.....plus the prices are right...especially for the amount of food you get......It's the inexpensive version of Fonda San Miguel on the southside of Austin.....Go soon and as often as you can !

I was excited to try this place out after reading all these positive reviews, but Evita's was almost nothing but bad the night I ate there. We arrived and there were only 3 other tables, but the waitress was running around like the place was packed. Throughout the meal, it was impressive how little she got done with all of the running around she was doing. The highlight of the meal, the chips and salsas, came out first. The salsas were very good. This is when the problems began. The service was miserable. As I said the waitress ran around, but we were constantly waiting. She got surly when I asked if I could have a glass for my beer. She also took my beer before I was finished and threw it away. Bad service. Good food would have made up for the bad service, unfortunately the food blew. The tamales were dry and looked old. The gorditas were pretty tasty, but boring. The bite I had of my lady's chicken fajitas was disgusting. The chicken was more fat than chicken. The ingredients that were used were across the board low quality. Not good. Don't go to Evita's.

We moved to Southwest Austin recently and had intended to try this place for a while. Never again. The multiple salsas at the beginning were the high point. We ordered chile con quesos as an appetizer...had to be Rico's nacho cheese sauce out of a can like at a basketball game. We ordered cheese enchiladas and chile relleno. Both were not fresh (frozen/microwaved?). The spanish rice was awful...mushy and flavorless.
