Wine Guide 2003 Whining about driving? Take a Hill Country wine tour Ed Crowell American-Statesman November 12, 2003 Touring vineyards in the Hill Country is not as easy as driving along the main road in Napa Valley, where tasting rooms dot the landscape every hundred yards or so. This is Texas, after all, and our vineyards are spread out for miles. A self-guided tour of a handful of vineyards here can be a taxing affair and demand a designated, wine-free driver. More relaxing tours can be had via at least three companies: Texas Wine Tours, a Fredericksburg-based outfit well known to many area vintners, (877) 839-9463, www.txwines.com; Texas Grape & Green Tours, which advertises fun trips with owner Mitch Lindsay, 365-8380, www.texaswinerytours.com; and TexasWineTours.com, a new offshoot of an Austin limo service, 329-7007 that, like the others, offers a choice of cushy vehicles and a driver. Cost depends on how many vineyards you visit, departure/return location and the vehicle. To see a map of the Hill Country wineries, click here. | |||||
