With its new five-star rating, Jeffrey's doesn't have an inferiority complex anymore. The crispy oysters are popular with diners.

No. 5: Jeffrey's

Over the past several years, Jeffrey's sat just outside the charmed circle of Austin's five-star restaurants.

Not so this year; Jeffrey's delivered a meal as close to perfection as one could ask for.

Even one of the restaurant's vegetarian entrees, a relatively simple gnocchi dish, is lovely.

Tossed with roasted tomatoes, chanterelle mushrooms, mozzarella cheese and whole leaves of basil in a light white wine-vegetable broth sauce, the pasta dumplings are as attractive as they are tasty.

That's exactly what should happen at Jeffrey's, the longtime upscale restaurant owned for more than a quarter-century by Jeffrey Weinberger and Ron and Peggy Weiss.

A good share of the credit for that goes to David Garrido, who has been executive chef since 1991. He has played a critical role in maintaining Jeffrey's reputation as an Austin classic.
