Breaking Down The Matchup

Tulane Overview: The Green Wave, which lost to Texas 49-0 in New Orleans last year, nonetheless went on to a fine 8-5 season, going 5-2 in Conference USA.

The (real-life) offseason's been a tad rocky, with some discussions about possibly dropping from Division I-A all the way to non-scholarship Division III.

On the field however, things haven't been so bad ... In 2003 the Green Wave will return starting quarterback J.P. Losman (who threw for 2,468 yards last year), versatile running back Mewelde Moore (1,210 yards rushing, 545 yards receiving) and several good wide receivers. Defense is a little thin, but the linebacking corps at least promises to be fairly experienced, returning two starters.

The Cyber-Wave, however, is off to a rough start. Tulane is 1-2, according to EA Sports, heading into the Texas game. Moore, their best running back by miles, is injured (strained back, out four weeks). The team doesn't do anything particularly well except turn the ball over (its -6 differential is tied for 109th in the NCAA ... out of 117 teams).

All in all, not the point in the season at which you'd like to visit Austin.

Records and Rankings: Texas 3-0, No. 3 in coaches' poll, No. 2 in writers' poll; Tulane 1-2, unranked in both polls.

Offensive Gameplan: I'm doing the split-duty quarterback thing again (two series for Chance Mock, two series for Vincent Young) amidst fading hopes one of them will step forward before next week's Big 12 opener against Kansas State.

I don't want to say I'm looking past Tulane, but let's just put it this way: I'm looking past Tulane.

Defensive Gameplan: Losman is a good quarterback without his best running back, so I'm planning on bringing some heat and smacking him around a great deal to make sure he doesn't find his rhythm.

I'm not overly intimidated by his receiving corps, although it's fairly deep. (Well, perhaps by the standards of the first three opponents, but still ...)

Bottom line, I'm not expecting too many surprises.

Keys: As long as my team doesn't turn the ball over too much or have an outbreak of penalties (neither has been a problem so far this season) we should coast.

Outlook: The announcers agree with me ... this will be a ritual slaughter.

On to The Game.
