Breaking Down The Matchup

Texas Tech Overview: It's the morning after for the Red Raiders ... at least most preseason publications seem to think so. In fairness, there's good reason to doubt ... losing your two best players -- QB Kliff Kingsbury on offense and LB Lawrence Flugence on defense -- will have that effect.

B.J. Symons takes over under center, and while he's been getting happy thoughts from teammates and coaches, he remains a relatively unknown quantity once the actual shooting starts.

If the cyber version of Symons is any indication, he'll live up to his fellow Raiders' expectations. Through 10 games, alt-Symons (Cy-mons?) has thrown for nearly 4,000 yards and 18 touchdowns ... the highest passing total of any Big 12 team so far this simulated season. His main target is Carlos Francis, who has 70 receptions and 1119 yards already.

The team doesn't run for anything (dead last in the Big 12 in that category), but behind Symons' arm, they're still 10th in total offense nationally.

The defense, however, has been porous, which accounts for their woeful 2-4 Big 12 record.

This is all good news for the Longhorns, who desperately want revenge for last year's 42-38 loss in Lubbock.

Records and Rankings: Texas 8-2, 4-2 Big 12, No. 9 in coaches' poll, No. 10 in writers' poll; Texas Tech is 4-6, 2-4, and unranked.

Offensive Gameplan: In addition to the fact the Raiders aren't very good defensively, they have major injuries among the linebacking corps. I'm gonna run and run and run to set up the play-action. Nothing fancy. Much more won't be needed. (And if it is, I'm in big trouble.)

Defensive Gameplan: Lots of dime and nickel looks with a minimum of blitzing ... at least until I figure out if Symons can beat me on it. If he can't ... we're teeing off.

Keys: Ball-control is everything against a team that can move the ball as well as Texas Tech. Long drives, lots of four-yard gains off-tackle on first down, and a minimum of turnovers will make me a happy guy.

Outlook: All three EA guys are again calling for a complete and utter rout of the Raiders. Payback for last year would be nice ...

On to The Game.
