Breaking Down The Matchup

Oklahoma State Overview: The Cowboys are almost universally being picked as up-and-comers in the Big 12 this year after going 8-5 in 2002. Even without the seven other victories, folks in Stillwater still would be bouncing off the walls after the team's second consecutive defeat of Oklahoma in last year's regular-season finale.

Are expectations too high? Maybe a little. But in quarterback Josh Fields and wideout Rashaun Woods they have one of the most potent combinations this side of Austin, and running back Tatum Bell is underrated.

Sadly for the Cyber-Cowboys, this hasn't translated into the video game world, as OSU is a mere 4-5 on the season, a miserable 1-4 in Big 12 play. That one Big 12 victory, though, is a big one -- yet another defeat of the Sooners that has energized them. However, the offense has been uneven and the defense, particularly the rushing defense, has been abysmal.

Big reason, at least for the offensive woes, is an injury to cyber-Rashaun Woods. He's hardly played this season, and won't play against us. This makes things much, much easier.

Bell is still a handful, though. He leads OSU with 794 yards rushing and has also caught 46 passes for 505 more yards. Fields is closing in on the 2,000 yards passing mark.

Records and Rankings: Texas 7-2, 3-2 Big 12, No. 12 in coaches' poll, No. 14 in writers' poll; Oklahoma State is 4-5, 1-4, and unranked.

Offensive Gameplan: We'll see if Cedric Benson is looking any better, because based on the statistics, I'd be crazy not to run on these guys. Letdown after the Nebraska loss -- particularly the way we lost to Nebraska -- is also a concern.

Defensive Gameplan: Without Woods, they're considerably less threatening, but Fields and Bell still form a daunting duo. (And the team still has D'Juan Woods, Rashaun's brother, lined up at the wideout ... not to mention a couple other decent receivers.) I'm gonna try to blitz a little more than lately, to try to rattle Fields -- who's probably a little pumped up after beating the Sooners.

Keys: Obviously keeping Bell in check is a major goal. If I can get Benson back over the century mark, it'll also be a good sign.

Outlook: All the EA Sports announcers are convinced I'm gonna wipe the floor with these guys. I take nothing ... nothing ... for granted anymore.

On to The Game.
