Breaking Down The Matchup

New Mexico State Overview: The real Aggies went 7-5 last season, 5-1 in the Sun Belt Conference, and were kicking themselves due to several late fades that probably cost 'em another three victories.

The offense is sort of a committee project, led by quarterback Buck Pierce (and his capable backup, Paul Dombrowski) who doesn't make too many huge plays, but doesn't make a lot of mistakes, either. Running back Eric Higgins is decent, although returning from an injury that cost him four games, and his backups also are pretty good.

They lost their starting wide receivers, but have some experienced seniors back in Chris Lumpkin and Ronshay Jenkins.

Defensively, they're solid at linebacker, but their defensive backfield is a little young. (All four of last season's starters graduated ... or at least ran out of eligibility.)

The video Aggies look pretty much the same as the real ones, with no significant variances from the real-life unit.

Records and Rankings: Texas 0-0, No. 4 in coaches' poll, No. 3 in writers' poll; New Mexico State 0-0, unranked in both polls.

Offensive Gameplan: I'm gonna hammer 'em with Cedric Benson early and often, keeping the pressure off Chance Mock (in his first-ever start). Once they start getting paranoid about Benson, I'll hit him with a little play-action and, hopefully, get up early enough that I'll be able to work my subs in by the third quarter.

Defensive Gameplan: Don't over-commit on the option, don't blitz too much, keep 'em in front of us - let the mismatches in the secondary provide the defense. They're a nip-and-nibble unit that will get some yardage, but -- provided we limit the big play -- won't see the end zone much (if at all).

Keys: No big plays for New Mexico State = No hope for the Aggies.

Outlook: I'm guessing the Youngs -- Selvin and Vincent -- are on the field by the third quarter.

On to The Game itself.
