Aggies Prove No Test For Horns

Game Stats | Game Aftermath

Final Score: UT 52, New Mexico State 10

Overview: Yeah, it wasn't even close. The Horns started a little slowly (go figure, huh?), as the Aggies kept it within three for most of the first period. But Cedric Benson rattled off 10 yards on his first carry, nine on his second and that was about as much as the Aggies stopped him all day.

The weather was hot and rainy, which helped bog down the Aggie offense -- although, as predicted, they did manage to move the ball (423 yards total offense), even if they couldn't punch it into the end zone until the game was well-past decided.

The subs didn't get in quite as early as I'd planned: Cedric got his 200-plus and gave way to Selvin about halfway through the third quarter, but Vincent didn't see action until the beginning of the fourth.

Oh, and when Vincent did see action? Oh, man - I had him handing off, mainly, since UT was sporting a five or six-TD lead at that point. But then I called a quarterback draw, and he breezed to an 11-yard gain. Intrigued, I called a pass, a play-action (naturally), and he threw a post-pattern rope to Sloan Thomas that netted a 42-yard touchdown. The drool is still slightly damp on my controller.

That said, Mock is still my starter.

But it's getting harder to say that.

In-game adjustments: Didn't really end up making many, other than dropping back into a two-deep cover once it was clear UT was gonna win and the Ags were going to chuck it almost every play from then on.

Key plays: B.J. Johnson made up for a bad case of the dropsies by hauling in a 38-yarder from Mock that took UT down to the 2-yard line late in the first quarter, setting up Benson's first touchdown. That seemed to snap the team out of its early-game malaise.

After that, the big ones were mainly Benson-related, particularly a 59-yard run when he started right, cut back left, and ran, untouched, to paydirt.

It was a joy to watch, really.

Player of the game: Benson. Not even a close second. (Although Sloan Thomas had a nice-enough game, with 101 yards and two TDs on three catches.) Benson had 233 yards on 24 carries -- which works out to 9.7-yards-per-carry -- and three touchdowns. Oh, and he took most of the second half off.

I consider this "promising."

On defense, Garnet Smith had eight tackles, three for loss, and a sack, but Derrick Johnson's speed was key in shutting down the Aggies' option play. He ended up with seven tackles, two for loss, and the first Defensive Player of the Week Award (voted upon by myself).

On to The Aftermath.
