Breaking Down The Matchup

K-State Overview: The Wildcats went 11-2 in 2002 (6-2 in the Big 12), with one of those losses a 17-14 home loss to the Longhorns. They beat Arizona State in the Holiday Bowl.

The team lost four starters on offense, mostly along the line, but return quarterback Ell Roberson and running back Darren Sproles, who contributed about 1,500 yards apiece to the Wildcat attack. Both have had solid springs, as well. The defense lost a bit more -- again, particularly up front.

This hasn't slowed down the Wildcats in the EA Sports game. Cyber-K-State is No. 1 in the country at stuffing the run, and 14th overall in defense.

On offense, the Cyber-Cats are the top team in rushing yards per game (319.5) and No. 3 in points per game (47.7).

Records and Rankings: Texas 4-0, No. 3 in coaches' poll, No. 2 in writers' poll; K-State 4-0, No. 15 in coaches' poll, No. 16 in writers' poll. (It's EA Sports' "Game of the Week.")

Offensive Gameplan: Ideally, I'd like to get an early touchdown or two, then grind out the clock to limit the number of times K-State touches the ball. How likely that is to happen is anybody's guess, especially against a team that's as good at playing the run as the Wildcats have been.

If we end up in a shootout, that'll be a bad thing, as Chance Mock hasn't been very consistent at delivering the ball upfield.

Defensive Gameplan: The challenge, as it always is against a QB like Roberson, is to contain him while not overplaying him (which leaves his wide receivers open for easy pickups). I'm gonna throw as many guys into the backfield with him as possible, to either trip him up or ... at a minimum ... hurry him into doing something foolish. (The fact my team only has five sacks to this point is ridiculous, and must change, and change soon.)

Keys: Limit our turnovers and get pressure on the quarterback. Given time, Roberson can do some significant damage.

Outlook: I'm ... what's the word ... cautiously optimistic? Well, actually, that's two words, but it sums everything up and why mess with it?

On to The Game.
