Breaking Down The Matchup

Baylor Overview: Last week the Bears beat Kansas, a feat they accomplished in real life last year, breaking a Big 12 losing streak that, according to fossilized records, dated back to the early-to-mid Jurrasic era. From this we conclude that Baylor is no longer to be trifled with. Granted, they've only one victory on the simulated season, and rank pretty close to the bottom in the NCAA in nearly every measurable statistic, but ... hey ... a Big 12 victory is a Big 12 victory. Go Bears. (Am I overselling this?)

The real Bears? Well, their struggles may continue. The team has its quarterback picked out (Aaron Karas), some decent running backs and receivers, but the offensive line remains a massive problem. As long as your line stinks, there's only so much you're going to be able to do. Defensively, they have some athletic talent, but they're soft up the middle and in some trouble on special teams.

Most publications are predicting victory totals in the "1 or 2" neighborhood. Baylor knows that neighborhood well. In fact, if the NCAA were Congress, Baylor would be that neighborhood's seasoned veteran Representative.

But enough jokes.

We'll see if new coach Guy Morriss can get a Big 12 winning streak going.

Records and Rankings: Texas 6-1, 2-1 Big 12, No. 7 in coaches' poll, No. 8 in writers' poll; Baylor is 1-6, 1-2, and unranked.

Offensive Gameplan: We have Cedric Benson back. I'm planning on mixing him in with Ivan Williams fairly liberally, easing him into the mix. That said, I'm going to pound the ball up the middle and get the running backs a full day's work, then give the backups the ball.

Defensive Gameplan: The EA version of this team doesn't run the ball at all, hence I expect to use a lot of nickel and dime formations. Pressure should be supplied by the front four, little blitzing needed.

Keys: A couple turnovers would be nice ... plus, they're woeful on special teams, and a big showing on punt returns (for a change) could really help me get this over with fast.

Outlook: Lee Corso predicted Baylor won't score a point. His cyber-cohorts agreed and said it was going to be a killing. Makes me nervous, a little bit.

On to The Game.
