Mario's Return A Kid-Friendly Entry

December 13, 2004

One of the granddaddies of platforming, the DS version of Mario has almost everything a fan could want. The animation was crisp, the colors were bright and clear, and the background shifted seemlessly as you moved around the palace, its grounds, or any lands you visit. The tasks were easy and fun (I'm probably not the target age group but I enjoyed the game anyway), and the dual screen format was in play almost the whole time, with maps and hints. Best part: you could use the stylus to move your character around the map in super-double quicktime, making chasing down foes a breeze.

It was hard to control the characters while swimming (the stylus isn't particular useful when wet, so to speak) and the sound wasn't ever loud enough for my tastes, but those are minor complaints for a nicely rendered, solid, kid-friendly game.
