While one quick level is all you get in the demo, it’s enough to make it clear this version (slated for a March release) is a completely different, and completely new, “Metroid.”
About the demo: The enemies are a cakewalk and it takes no time to dominate the level, the play virtually seamless. The controls (once I gave in and began using the stylus) are the best I have ever encountered for a first person shooter. There are no lags or load times. You stalk (or roll — in ball mode, which is so super cool) through the level as a Regulator, taking out everything that gets in your way. You can also choose the Survivor mode where you just stand your ground against a never-ending onslaught of enemies that grow in strength and viciousness.
The multiplayer possibilities had me really wishing I could find someone else with a DS. (Indeed, I almost went to the mall to find some punk kid to go head to head with.)
It is just that good.
