Madden Does The Job

December 13, 2004

Some have ripped this title for its graphics – which admittedly would look more at home in “Madden” circa 98 or 99 – but I’d trade hi-def graphics for solid gameplay any day and the DS version of “Madden 2005” has solid gameplay in fistfuls.

The second screen – which serves as a play-selection center in between plays and displays the entire field in x’s and o’s while plays are running – plays a major role, particularly on passing downs. While finding the open receiver is almost impossible in the tiny, traditional display up top, checking off your primary and secondary receivers on the bottom screen takes but a glance.

Some of the bells and whistles we’ve grown accustomed to in the console versions have been trimmed – no legacy teams, no vibrant and deep off-season and the play-by-play and color commentary tracks are kept to a stark minimum (no big loss there). But this is a noble first effort in a sports game (the first 3D models for a handheld football game ever), and I’m a little excited to see what the second screen can do for other sports. (How long until an NHL game comes out?)
