There aren’t many local restaurants with Asian cuisine that offer cocktails to match, but Sway aims to join their ranks.
The Thai restaurant in South Austin, now armed with a liquor license, is offering mixed drinks — specifically, “Thai takes on classic cocktails,” according to a press release. They join Sway’s large selection of beer, wine and sake.
Each of the cocktails feature fresh herbs, house-made syrups and local ingredients. It was important to New Waterloo, the group behind Sway and other hospitality concepts including La Condesa and the South Congress Hotel, to create drinks that would complement the often fiery cuisine available at Sway.
“Developing each cocktail was an exercise in flavor balance and celebrating the distinct flavors of Thailand. They can hold up to the heat of Sway’s cuisine without getting lost or be overpowering,” Mandi Nelson, beverage director of New Waterloo, said in the release.
Here’s what’s on the opening cocktail menu.
- Bangkok 75: gin, secret garden tea, lemon, sparkling wine
- Monk Water: vodka, pineapple, lime, cucumber, mint, cilantro, soda water
- Same Same Tonic: gin, galangal spices, lime, tonic
- Lotus Margarita: tequila, Combier, tamarind, lime salt
- Tuk Tuk Sling: butterfly tea-infused gin, benedictine, Combier, cherry heering, pineapple, lime, blackberry
- Koh Koh Breeze: vodka, Combier, lemon, raspberry-lychee, coconut cream
- The Emperor: whiskey, Aperol, lemon, chai tea
- To Magnolia City with Love: rum, lychee, fresh orange, cherry
All proceeds of the last cocktail on the list benefit Hurricane Harvey relief. It had previously been released last year with sake, rather than rum, and was part of New Waterloo’s efforts to help with the state’s widespread Harvey relief efforts.
Two additional locations of Sway, in the Westlake area and at Domain Northside, are expected to open early this year.
