'Yappy hours' give canines, owners a place to mix and mingle

Plenty of patios and outdoor spaces in Austin welcome dogs, but here we present a few regular yappy hours that treat them extra special. (They offer stuff for the accompanying humans, too.) It's a great way to spend some social time with your pets, but consider whether your dog would enjoy the energy and being up close and personal with other dogs and people before you go. Check whether your dog can be off leash before you release the hound. And if you have a favorite that's not listed, email the details to schapman@statesman.com and we'll update our list online.

Austin Yappy Hour

Dog trainer Nancy Cusick-Finck started this event about four years ago, and they happen on the last Friday of the month (with a break in November and December). Cusick-Finck and other trainers are available to answer questions, and dog-friendly local vendors are usually on hand. With live music and drink specials for the humans, and baby pools and other fun stuff for the dogs. You can see a video of a previous yappy hour on Cusick-Finck's website that gives a taste of the energy at the event, like a big play group for the dogs. 7 p.m. Friday. Free. Irie Bean Coffee Bar, 2310 S. Lamar Blvd. 382-5056, www.trainmydogs.com .

Canine Cocktail Yappy Hour

Lucy's Retired Surfer Bar & Restaurant has a regular dog-friendly menu for the patio, with items such as the Hot Diggity Dog (plain hot dog with bun, $1.50) and the Canine Kahuna (grilled chicken breast, $2). Regular happy hour is from 3 to 7 p.m. Free. 506 West Ave. 236-0083, www.lucysretiredsurfers.com .

Dogadillo Yappy Hour

The canine boutique in the dog-friendly Hill Country Galleria offers treats and water for the four-legged guests, plus wine and appetizers for the folks on the other end of the leashes. They also have special guests at each event, which happen on the second Tuesday of the month. The next one is 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Mar. 11 and will feature Harlen Winter, a snake avoidance specialist who runs Winter Kennels. Free. 12912 Hill Country Blvd. 512-402-9663, www.dogadillo.com
