Danny Witte is a self-proclaimed foodie whose adventurous taste buds and appreciation for the burgeoning food scene in Austin have helped him discover many of Austin's best bars and restaurants.
With the ability of a restaurant critic to name many of the good local dining joints, as well as their best item on the menu, the associate brand manager at Sweet Leaf Tea has a suggestion for where to go for just about any type of meal at any time of day.
For instance, his Sundays are often planned around two Sixth Street bars that also serve delicious food. In the morning, he likes to go to Casino El Camino for one of its Bloody Mary drinks, which he says is the best in town. (He also recommends the burgers there, especially the L.A. Burger with sprouts, avocado and shallot mayo.)
For Sunday lunch and some afternoon ping pong, he swings by Easy Tiger. There, he likes to order the corned beef or the garlic sausage, which reminds him of his childhood in a small town near Victoria, where his dad raised hogs to make sausage.
Another common part of his Sunday routine is going to happy hour at either Uchi or Uchiko, sister sushi restaurants located along Lamar Boulevard. Both have lower prices and a separate menu for "sake social" from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. every day.
Witte is also willing to try new foods wherever he goes.
"I don't always know what to order, but I'm fearless," he says. "I'll try something I've never had or the item least chosen."
The latest restaurant he's tried and liked is Lenoir, a transformed cottage house off South First Street that offers a prix fixe menu and a great wine list.
He's also planning to give Swift's Attic, a recently opened eatery atop the Elephant Room off Congress Avenue, a taste.
Others Witte recommends? East Side King, his favorite food trailer, for the beet fries, and Cisco's Restaurant Bakery and Bar, one of his favorite breakfast spots, for the migas plate.
And he would say Fabi and Rosi European Kitchen for eggs Benedict, until the Tarrytown restaurant did away with the brunch menu.
All the local food options are a big reason he loves Austin, he says, where he has lived since going to the University of Texas several years ago.
"It's a small town trying to be a big city, and the food scene is really coming into its own," he says.
