If Angie Blankenship didn't have a very adventurous palate when she was living in what she calls the "concrete jungle" of Dallas, she does now.
The green sales operation coordinator at BlueAvocado, a small Austin company that designs and sells reusable bags, loves her job and has no plans to leave, but she still likes to think fancifully of becoming a food blogger who "gets to run around town tasting all different kinds of food."
In the meantime, she'll stick to satisfying her cravings for specific drinks and meals at the restaurants that have perfected exactly what she's craving.
For Blankenship, Sunday brunch can be at only one of three places: Moonshine Patio Bar & Grill at Red River and East Third streets, Taverna by Lombardi at Lavaca and West Second streets or El Alma Café y Cantina on Barton Springs Road.
Even though she's eaten at El Alma only once (so far), she can't stop raving about her favorite new discovery. She even snapped some photos of her meal: the chilequilas verdes con pollo and a mango mimosa.
And if brunch-goers are kept waiting for a table at Taverna, she recommends making the wait easier by sucking down the one-buck-apiece mimosas.
She also speaks highly of Trace Restaurant, inside the W Hotel on Lavaca Street, for more than just its good food. Head chef Ben Hightower is the husband of one of her co-workers, and she loves his mission of making gourmet meals with locally sourced ingredients.
In fact, many of her favorite dining spots prepare their meals with homegrown food, such as South Congress' Vespaio, with much of its daily fare coming from the restaurant's own garden.
For more organic, local and even vegan offerings, there's also Vivo, a Tex-Mex joint on Manor Road with a great patio area.
Blankenship has favorite drink options, too. Second Bar + Kitchen's attention to detail means the downtown restaurant makes sure to serve a Moscow Mule in a copper cup, exactly as it's traditionally served. The Moscow Mule is a vodka cocktail, but a bartender at East Austin eatery Contigo suggested she try the drink with tequila instead, a combination that she says he pulled off. And she'll go nowhere else but Guero's Taco Bar, a South Congress taqueria, for a sangria swirl, a frozen margarita floated with sangria wine.
