January is typically a slow month for comedy and 2013 is no exception. Still, what the calendar lacks in quantity it makes up for in quality — there’s an eclectic mix of humorous events hitting Austin clubs, stages and buses (yeah, you heard me) in the new year. Let’s take a look:
Mike Birbiglia
Jan. 11
The comic, writer, “This American Life” contributor and actor’s one-man show, “My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend,” searches for reason in love. On the way, he’ll give you plenty of reasons to laugh. A critics’ pick in all of the places where such accolades count, the show has toured Canada, Australia and the good old U.S. of A. 8 p.m., The Paramount Theatre, 713 Congress Ave. $40-$43. 474-1221, www.austintheatre.org.
Dan Harmon
Jan. 11
The ousted creator of NBC’s “Community” tapes his podcast, “Harmontown,” in Austin. Part confessor, part stand-up, the outspokenly inharmonious Harmon never pulls punches and can be counted on to tell you exactly what’s on his twisted mind. “Who’s Line Is It, Anyway’s?” Jeff Davis joins Harmon on his roller-coaster ride. 10:30 p.m., Cap City Comedy Club, 8120 Research Blvd., No. 100. $20-$24. 467-2333, www.capcitycomedy.com.
Comedy Brewery Bus Tour
Jan. 19
What’s better than craft beer and comedy on a Saturday morning? Dare to be you! Laugh openly and loudly at all those health-conscious people jogging on the Lady Bird Lake hike-and-bike trail (or just keep your Friday night buzz going!). Enjoy beer samples at four bar stops, detours to food trailers and tour guide chuckles courtesy of a local stand-up. 10 a.m., Black Star Co-op Pub and Brewery, 7020 Easy Wind Drive. $48. 825-7725, www.tapbrewtours.com.
Igudesman and Joo
Jan. 21
The YouTube sensations — Russian violinist Igudesman and Korean/British pianist Joo — have the funniest take on classical music since the halcyon days of Tom Lehrer and Allan Sherman. They hilariously push the boundaries of their talents and instruments, producing endlessly entertaining takes on such unlikely pieces as the disco anthem “I Will Survive,” in their show, “A Little Nightmare Music.” I’m not sure why one of them is wearing tails, boxer shorts and socks, but I’m sure it makes some kind of strange sense in context. Hey — when Monty Python member Terry Jones calls you absurd, it means something. Dell Hall at the Long Center for the Performing Arts, 701 W. Riverside Drive. $20-$45. 474-5664, www.thelongcenter.org.
Lisa Lampanelli
Jan. 26
Say hello to the “Queen of Mean,” unless you’re easily offended — in that case, you should just cover your ears and slink quietly away. The raunchy insult comic (her undeniably hilarious, expletive-laden attacks on Comedy Central roasts would be one long, uninterrupted bleep on network television) can dial it back when she wants to, as in her tasteful turn in David Chase’s new film, “Not Fade Away,” where she’s nearly unrecognizable. Still, her stand-up promises something to offend everybody! 8 p.m., The Paramount Theatre, 713 Congress Ave. $48.50. 474-1221, www.austintheatre.org.
Bobby Lee
Jan. 31-Feb. 2
“Mad TV” veteran and proud Korean American Lee brings his stand-up act, presumably chock-full of his mock anger at stereotypes and maybe a Connie Chung impression or two, to the strip mall. Various times, Cap City Comedy Club, 8120 Research Blvd., No. 100. $17-$21. 467-2333, www.capcitycomedy.com.
