We’re just a month away from South by Southwest, and the food events are starting to roll in.
Brooklyn Brewery has hosted (or co-hosted or sponsored) plenty of events and beer dinners in Austin in recent years, but nothing like the week of events it has slated for March 6-10.
The Brooklyn Brewery Mash is actually a national 11-city tour of “parties, comedy, concerts, pop-up supper clubs and readings, all featuring humanity’s favorite beverage,” but it will kick off during South by Southwest Interactive in Austin with more than half a dozen events all around town. Some of the proceeds of “The Mash” will go to Slow Food USA.
The Austin Mash starts with an underground event at 7 p.m. March 6 called Chaos Cooking where Austinites will open their homes for a dinner party in which the guests, whom the host does not know, do the cooking. You can find details and sign up at ChaosCooking.com.
At 7 p.m. March 7, Swift’s Attic, 315 Congress Ave., will host a multi-course beer dinner featuring food from both Swift’s Attic chef Mat Clouser and Brooklyn Brewery’s house chef, Andrew Gerson. Details and reservations available by calling 482-8842.
Springdale Farm, 755 Springdale Road, will host one of the biggest events of the week at 6 p.m. Friday, March 8, that will feature Harlem chef (and Food & Wine favorite) Marcus Samuelsson and Dai Due Austin’s Jesse Griffiths talking about how technology affects the food world. After the discussion, they’ll serve a locally sourced dinner ($100) that will be followed at 9 p.m. by a NY Night Train Soul Clap & Dance-Off (free, with RSVP at brooklynbrewerymash.com ) with DJ Jonathan Toubin. Dance contest starts at 11 p.m.
At the Cedar Park Farmers Market on Saturday, March 9, and the Mueller Farmers Market on Sunday, March 10, Brooklyn Brewery house chef Andrew Gerson will host free cooking demonstrations with food from the market vendors.
Brooklyn Brewery is the presenting sponsor at the Smoke Experiment, the cooking competition taking place from 1 to 4 p.m. March 10 at Clive Bar, 609 Davis St. This is the third year for the contest to take place in Austin. Tickets cost $15 at thefoodexperiments.com, where you also can find details about competing.
After the Smoke Experiment, the Clive Bar will host the final Brooklyn Brewery event of the week: a free show with Brooklyn bands Prince Rama, the Dig and Sinkane, as well as “odd, rare and outrageous VHS clips” from Found Footage Festival and projection art by Nuit Blanche and beer from Brooklyn Brewery. More on all the Brooklyn Brewery events at brooklynbrewery.com.
The Bacon takedown. Now in its fourth year, the Bacon Takedown, produced by Brooklyn-based food competition event producer Matt Timms, will pit bacon-loving Austin cooks against one another in a contest from 2 to 4 p.m. March 9 at Hickory Street, 800 Congress Ave.
Tickets cost $15 at the door and online at thetakedowns.com, and if you’d like to sign up to enter a bacon dish (event sponsor Hormel gives 15 pounds of its Black Label bacon to participants), you can email Timms at chilitakedown@gmail.com.
