AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF
When it comes to the radio broadcasters here in town, y'all aren't shy about
sharing your opinions.
One reader, Bob Jarvis, passed along a little ditty he crafted after
witnessing all the recent changes at 98.1 KVET-FM, including the departures
of several well-known personalities and a tweaked playlist that seems to
favor recent songs over many of the classic country hits listeners had grown
to expect over the years.
He's certainly not alone in his displeasure. Emails about KVET-FM land in my
inbox on a pretty regular basis.
But, let's be fair here. It's not just KVET-FM. The other stations are likely
doing things that bother you, as well. If that's the case, shoot me an
email. I'd love to hear from you and perhaps include you in a future column.
I'm not looking to stir things up; I promise. There's a lot to like about
Austin radio — and I'd love it if you sent praise for your favorite DJs my
way. I'd be happy to put that in print and online, too.
The goal here is to give everyone a chance to be heard.
That said, Jarvis gave me permission to share a portion of his "remake"
of George Strait and Allan Jackson's "Murder on Music Row." So,
here ya go:
Nobody saw them running
From Congress Avenue;
They never found the fingerprints
Or the weapon that was used;
But some dudes killed country music,
Cut out its heart and soul;
They got away with murder
On KVET radio.
The almighty dollar
And deejays' lust for fame,
Slowly killed tradition,
And for that, someone should hang;
They dumped ol Sammy Allred,
And the evidence will show
That murder was committed
On KVET radio.
For the steel guitars no longer cry
And the fiddles barely play;
But drums and rock n' roll guitars
Are mixed up in your face;
Ol' Hank's no longer heard
On KVET radio —
Since they committed murder
And axed Tom Allen's show.
Thanks, Bob.

Around the dial ...
At least two U.S. radio stations have dumped Rush Limbaugh's show in recent
days, but the conservative host is still on the air here in Austin on
NewsRadio 590 KLBJ-AM. Radio-Info.com
reports broadcasters in Hilo, Hawaii, and Pittsfield, Mass., stopped running
Limbaugh's show after he referred to a college student advocating for
improved access to contraceptives as a "slut" and a "prostitute."
A number of advertisers announced they were abandoning the show, at least
temporarily, including AOL, Netflix and Sears. Limbaugh has since
apologized. ... Read my blog at austin360.com/tvblog

Most-played list: Adele dethrones Flo Rida
The "Good Feeling" is gone.
Flo Rida's hit song, which sat atop Austin radio's most-played list for more
than a month, has taken a tumble, seeing its airtime cut by more than half
on sister stations 96.7 KISS-FM and 102.3 the Beat. The city's new No. 1,
according to AllAccess.com, is
Adele's "Set Fire to the Rain," which had 215 spins Feb. 28-March
5.
Moving up the charts: Big Sean's "My Last," The Wanted's "Glad
You Came," Gym Class Heroes' "(Expletive) Back Home," Kelly
Clarkson's "Stronger" ("What Doesn't Kill You") and
Foster the People's "Don't Stop" ("Color on the Walls").
On the way down: Bruno Mars' "It Will Rain" and Foo Fighters' "These
Days."
