This weekend, you can pick your musical poison

Rock, blues, metal, R&B – you don't have to go far to find a show that will fit your tastes

By Joe Gross

Sometimes, there are weekends in Austin where there is just something for everyone. Rock, hip-hop, R&B, country: it's all covered. This is one of those weekends.

For those into punk and indie rock, locals Love Collector celebrate the release of their new 7-inch record with a free show 7 p.m. at Trailer Space. Gospel Truth, Neighbor, Gangster Rainbow join them on Friday. Later that night, there is a Riot Grrrl karaoke benefit for Girls Rock Camp Austin with the Karaoke Underground at the 29th Street Ballroom. It's an all-ages event, and donations will be accepted. You will likely see many of your favorite local rockers ripping through Bikini Kill's "New Radio" (still their finest song) or Bratmobile's immortal "Girl Germs," perhaps either before or after seeing Swedish rocker Anders Osbourne at the Parish the same evening.

Blues fans get a special treat when North Mississippi (think the hypnotic sounds of Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside) bluesman Robert "Wolfman" Belfour joins Hosea Hargrove and Thee Unseen Eye at the Continental Club on Saturday night.

If vintage alternative rock is your bag, cough up for a baby sitter and check out Jane's Addiction with The Duke Spirit at Bass Concert Hall on Saturday night. If you need still more 1990s rock icons, Black Bananas (also known as the artist formerly known as RTX, aka. the ongoing musical project of Jennifer Herrema, formerly of Royal Trux) play Red 7 later Saturday, along with wild improvisational rockers Magik Markers and Dwarr.

If Jane's Addiction is a little too bonkers for you, there is always Foreigner at the Backyard at Bee Cave.

Metal fans should check out underground acts Belligerency, Immerse, Unmothered and Wizard Wolf at the Legendary White Swan on Friday night. Then they will likely want to queue up Saturday for New Orleans sludge monsters Eyehategod with Venomous Maximus at the 29th Street Ballroom, of all places (it's a great venue, just not one usually associated with metal). Fans of a slightly less apocalyptic metal should pop in at the Ignitor CD release show at Lovejoys, along with Maelstrom and Skycrawler.

Folks who didn't get enough psychedelic rock at Psych Fest (or the Roger Waters show, for that matter) would do well to check out Japanese space-rock lifers Acid Mothers Temple, along with the Clang Quartet, inside (!) Saturday night at the Mohawk. The slightly more "inside" Ume rock the Hotel Vegas, also on Saturday.

Electro and dance get a workout at Emo's East on Saturday when Canadian electronic duo MSTRKRFT throws down with Araabmuzik, Bird Peterson and Applied Pressure.

Unusually, this is also an amazing weekend for rap, funk and R&B. Hip-hop fans who came of age in the Clinton administration will have to wait until next month to see Lil' Kim, whose Friday show has been moved to June 19 at Emo's East. But local reggae artists Don Chani are still celebrating their album release Friday with Hardproof Afrobeat at Club deVille.

Saturday, the funkadelic Rebirth Brass Band shakes it on down at Stubb's, while 1980s rap icons Salt N Pepa perform at the Belmont. The flood of hip-hop continues Sunday, with LNS Crew, V.I.P. and Poison Boyz inside at the Mohawk and Austin rapper Dat Boy Supa and Marvelous Mike D. at the Red Eyed Fly.

And then there is an "Intimate Night with R. Kelly" at the Mansion in East Austin on Saturday night, which will likely bleed into the wee hours of Mother's Day and is being billed as a Mother's Day show. You may make your own joke about someone getting pregnant before, during or after.
