Austin will once again have a strong presence at the Independent Spirit Awards.

Richard Linklater’s “Bernie,” a dark comedy about a bizarre East Texas murder, was nominated for best feature. Linklater’s film, based on a Texas Monthly article by Skip Hollandsworth, is joined by crowd-pleasers “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” “Silver Linings Playbook,” “Moonrise Kingdom” and “Keep the Lights On.” “Bernie” star Jack Black received a nomination for best actor, as did former Austinite John Hawkes for “The Sessions.”

Austinite Matthew McConaughey garnered two nominations: best actor for his chilling portrayal of a dirty cop in “Killer Joe” and best supporting actor for his sexy, oiled-up role as a strip club owner in “Magic Mike.”

University of Texas graduate and native Austinite Elizabeth Mims and her filmmaking partner Jason Tippet were nominated for the Truer Than Fiction award for their touching and mesmerizing documentary “Only the Young.” The documentary about two teenage friends in Southern California made its world premiere at the Austin Film Festival in October and has been purchased for distribution by Oscilloscope.

“Safety Not Guaranteed,” which screened at South by Southwest, received nominations for best first feature and best first screenplay. The quirky quest comedy was co-produced by University of Texas grads Mark and Jay Duplass. Fellow SXSW alumnus “Gimme the Loot,” which made its world premiere at the festival in March, also earned a best first feature nomination. “Gayby” writer-director Jonathan Lisecki also earned a best first screenplay nod for his SXSW film that was lensed by Austinite Clay Liford.

The Independent Spirit Awards take place Feb. 23 and will air on IFC.
