Moontower Comedy Festival unveils lineup

By Dale Roe

American-Statesman Staff

Paramount Theatre Executive Director Jim Ritts took to the venue’s lobby on Tuesday to announce the lineup for the second annual Moontower Comedy and Oddity Festival. The Paramount will host headlining performers for this year’s event, running Apr. 24-27 throughout Austin.

“Saturday Night Live’s” Bill Hader will kick off the performances Apr. 24 at 7 p.m. Famous for a wide range of impressions and characters — from an annoyed Vincent Price to the anxious and giggly New York City clubber Stefon — the comic is expected to trot out many of his most popular creations.

Other headliners include rising stars (and Comedy Central roast veterans) Anthony Jeselnik and Amy Schumer; actor and comic Jim Gaffigan; Opie and Anthony contributor Jim Norton; another “SNL” alumnus, Dana Carvey; and podcasting comedian Bill Burr.

“I’m a huge (Stevie Ray Vaughan) & Double Trouble fan,” Burr says. “To be on a stage in Austin is beyond an honor. Thank you for letting me run my mouth for an hour at your festival.”

Carvey headlines on the 25th, Burr on the 26th and Gaffigan headlines two shows on the festival’s closing night.

Among those returning to Moontower for a second year are comic and “WTF” podcaster Marc Maron, loopy Maria Bamford and Andy Kindler. The festival will continue to feature local standup and improvisational comics.

In addition, Ritts announced that midnight shows have been added at the Paramount to accommodate comedy fans who numbered an estimated 20,000 in 2012. Performers at midnight shows include Schumer and Norton.

While additional venues have been added for this year’s effort, the geographic range has been tightened to make getting from place to place easier and faster. With the exception of the Cap City Comedy Club and the Scottish Rite Theatre, all 2013 Moontower venues are within walking distance of one another downtown.

The festival has also expanded its badge lineup.

A $599 “VIP” badge includes preferred seating, guaranteed admission to all shows at all venues and other perks including drink tickets and access to artist meet-and-greets. The least expensive badge, “You Betcha I’m Somebody,” costs $129 and includes entry after VIP badge- and single ticket-holders.

New this year is the mid-range “Ace” badge. At $299, it includes all the amenities of the low-end badge. Additionally, Ace badge-holders get premium seating at four Paramount Theatre headliner shows, guaranteed admission to all midnight shows at the Paramount and 15 percent off festival merchandise.

Complete badge information and sales are available now at moontowercomedyfestival.com; single tickets for Paramount and Cap City shows go on sale Feb. 19.
