Openings, closings and food events: 24-hour coffeeshop opening on Riverside Drive

Opening Saturday: The Buzz Mill, a 24-hour coffeeshop at 1505 Town Creek Drive, just off East Riverside Drive, that in addition to traditional coffeeshop offerings will serve beer and liquor. Food trailer Blue Ox BBQ and Pancake Cabin will open in the coffeeshop’s large outdoor patio to sell both barbecue and pancakes. The owners are planning a grand opening party at 8 p.m. Saturday with live music from Possessed by Paul James and the Bottom Feeders. 912-9221, buzzmillcoffee.com.

    The chefs behind Trace and Noble Sandwiches are teaming up for a Brews with Bates event on Wednesday, Jan. 23, at the restaurant inside the W Hotel downtown.   • Remember when that Catholic priest made fajitas that were better than Bobby Flay’s on Flay’s “Throwdown!” show on the Food Network? Baltimore priest and cookbook author Leo Patalinghug is visiting Austin next week for two fundraiser events for the Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Austin. At 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at Mercury Hall, 615 Cardinal Lane, Patalinghug will talk about his books, “Grace Before Meals” and “Spicing Up Married Life,” and prepare the winning fajita recipe that helped launch his mission of helping families stay together by cooking together. On Saturday, he’s the featured speaker for the annual Celebrating Catholic Schools dinner and awards ceremony at the Renaissance Hotel.     Jo’s Coffee is hosting its seventh annual chili cook-off and two-step competition from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, at the popular coffeeshop at 1300 S. Congress Ave. As in years’ past, local chefs and cook-off teams will compete for prizes and attendees can try all the chilis for a $20 tasting ticket.     If you’re looking for an excuse to go to Houston in the next few weeks, Austin barbecue man John Mueller is cooking for a fundraiser for Housing Houston’s Heroes from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9. Ribs, brisket and sausage will be available by the pound, and the Palisades will perform live music. All of the money from the food sales will go to the Houston charity that helps find housing for the city’s homeless veterans. Search “Q for a Cause” on Facebook to find more details.
