If we haven't had the first autumn cool front to shake us out of the doldrums of summer, this week sees a busy round of openings proof that the fall arts season has begun. Here are our top picks.

Anthony W. Garza

With a naturalist's keen sense of detail and specificity, Anthony W. Garza captures the awe-inspiring particulars of nature in intricately rendered monochromatic paintings and drawings. And yet, in Garza's view, the interference of human-made structures with the natural world suggests evolution gone far off-track. With a masterful sense of draftsmanship, Garza shows us a landscape where the animate and inanimate combine in subtle yet disconcerting ways.

"The Sketchbook Project 2012 World Tour"

When: 4 to 8 p.m. Sept. 12-15, 2 to 6 p.m. Sept. 16. Co-Lab, 613 Allen St. www.colabspace.org.

For six years, the organizers of the Sketchbook Project have invited anyone interested to fill a 32-page sketchbook and add it to the project's Brooklyn-based library. More than 20,000 sketchbooks from 130 countries have been acquired, and a traveling exhibit of about 7,000 of them is making its way around the world. The mobile library of artists' sketchbooks makes an Austin stop at Co-Lab Space in East Austin. Assisted by librarian-like guides, visitors can check out sketchbooks for perusal at the gallery cum reading room.

"Xochi Solis: New Works"

Opening 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday. Exhibit continues noon to 8 p.m. Tuesdays-Sundays through Oct. 18. Olive Vintage, Domy Books, 913 E. Cesar Chavez St. www.xochisolis.com

Xochi Solis is as much inspired by the flora and fauna of the natural world as she is by pop music and culture. Her small, colorful, collaged paintings might incorporate house paint, kraft paper, vinyl, cork or even pieces of plastic. And while there might be an immediate sense of buoyancy to Solis' work, there's an underlying discipline of form, color and composition that buttresses her vivid abstractions.

"Jim Torok: There Is Nothing Wrong with You"

Opening: 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday. Exhibit continues 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays-Saturdays through Oct. 27. Lora Reynolds Gallery, 360 Nueces St. www.lorareynolds.com

Brooklyn-based artist Jim Torok gets his fourth Austin solo show at Lora Reynolds Gallery. "There Is Nothing Wrong with You" includes more than 50 new autobiographical cartoons in which Torok appears as a blobbish figure with an ovoid head and an enormous nose as he confronts the anxiety, absurdity and frustrations of everyday modern life.
