"The Rules of Basketball: Works by Paul Pfeiffer and James Naismith's Original Rules of Basket Ball." Sept. 16-Jan. 13

► Opening next month at the Ransom Center, "I Have Seen the Future: Norman Bel Geddes Designs America" charts the remarkable output of visionary industrial and theatrical designer Norman Bel Geddes, whose style of utopian, streamlined modernism shaped America's mid-century idea of itself. Sept. 11-Jan. 6

► Austin artist W. Tucker will literally live in the Texas State University Gallery for a week to produce a massive site-specific drawing in his idiosyncratic yet earnest style. Sept. 24-Oct. 18

DANCE

Critic's picks

► This season marks the centennial of Stravinsky's ground-breaking ballet "The Rite of Spring," a work that jump-started modernism with its dissonance and polyrhythms. Ballet Austin artistic director Stephen Mills creates his own version of the ballet, Feb. 15-17. The Joffrey Ballet brings its re-creation of the original to the Bass Concert Hall on March 5-6. Then on April 6 comes Australian innovator Meryl Tankard's "The Oracle," a stark contemporary rethinking on "The Rite of Spring."
