Business Insider teamed up with Foursquare to determine America’s favorite fast food, and social media isn’t happy 

We all remember Foursquare, right? The social media check-in app that let users show off how frequently they visited places, before Facebook and virtually every other social media platform gave users that same function?

Well, apparently, Business Insider remembers, too, because they teamed up with Foursquare to find out which fast food restaurant America craves the most. Their methodology: The team looked at which fast food chains “received the most visits on average in every state based on the total number of visits to each chain divided by the number of locations in that state.”

Once the results were released, Texans (and others) on the internet were pretty mad. Why? Well, for one, there’s no Whataburger anywhere to be seen on this map, but just take a look at what fast-food joint supposedly has Texas’ heart:

Blasphemy. Business Insider.

That’s right. IN-N-OUT. Everyone who complains that we have too many California transplants in Texas, your worries are now validated. And apparently people love checking into Foursquare when they go to Chick-Fil-A. 

There’s a lot of Chick-Fil-A on this map, but let’s take a look at the methodology. Say there were 10 Chick-Fil-A’s in Texas, but there were only five In-N-Outs. By Business Insider’s and Foursquare’s formula, if both restaurants each had 50 visits, In-N-Out comes out on top with 10 visits on average to Chick-Fil-A’s five, even though there are more Chick-Fil-A restaurants than In-N-Outs in Texas (in this imaginary scenario). 

That explains why a juggernaut like Whataburger could be left off of this list. And the only reason why there’s no Chick-Fil-A dominance in Alaska and Hawai’i is because there are no Chick-Fil-A locations in those states. Other fun findings: California rejected its homegrown In-N-Out burgers for Raising Cane’s, while Oklahoma really likes Taco Bueno. 

People on social media were not happy with the Whataburger disrespect. 

Later Thursday, Business Insider deleted the inital tweet about the article. The article is still up, but that didn’t stop some eagle-eyed tweeters from catching it.

Whatburger’s business Twitter account even got into the fun.

In short, nah, Business Insider and Foursquare, you’re wrong.
