For one night, Jandek returns to the stage

Also: Merle Haggard, Strings Attached, more live music

Thursday, June 28, 2007

The legendary Texas recluse Jandek is slated to perform at 7:30 p.m. July 21 at the Rose Marine Theater in Fort Worth.

Joining the Corwood Industries principal is an all-Texas backing band: Susan Alcorn on pedal steel, Austin's own Ralph White on fiddle and banjo, Baptist General bassist Ryan Williams and Centro-matic singer/songwriter Will Johnson on drums. Like Voltron, they will combine for one night only to form Jandek. Tickets at Good Records in Dallas, End of an Ear in Austin, and at www.ticketalternative.com.

Ha Lam
FOR AMERICAN-STATESMAN

Jandek performs at the Scottish Rite Theatre in his first performance in the United States on August 29, 2005.

The concert will be filmed by Lee Daniel, a filmmaker who has shot multiple Richard Linklater films, as well as the Townes Van Zandt documentary "Be Here to Love Me," and the Roky Erickson doc "You're Gonna Miss Me." No word on if the first person objective pronoun will be in the title of wherever the film ends up. Personally, I'm pulling for a concert film called "Me, Jandek."

Jandek has played a handful of shows since 2004, when he emerged from 25 years of willful anonymity to perform in Glasgow, Scotland, at the Instal 04 festival. Most of the shows have been documented on CD, the most recent (and Jandek's most recent album in general) is "Manhattan Sunday," a live double CD. He's joined by a cast of underground improv superstars — "Venusian bluesman" Loren Connors on electric guitar, brilliant free drummer Chris Corsano and Corsano's associate Matt Heyner on bass. Jandek plays Moog, for a proggy, spectral set as dark as deepest space. It's an excellent addition to the canon. (Jandek's Austin show is documented on the "Austin Sunday" live double CD.)

MORE LIVE MUSIC

Country legend Merle Haggard comes to Kyle on Sunday to play an exclusive special show for old pal and songwriting partner Freddy Powers. The concert, at the Texas Old Town Events Center (1205 Roland Lane), benefits Powers' Parkinson's Foundation. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $250. Check out www.freddypowers.org for more information. The foundation also hosts a fundraising show Saturday night at Donn's Depot. ...

Also Sunday, Will Taylor's Strings Attached adds the Uptown Marble Theater to its regular venues with a 2 p.m. performance of Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon." Ticket price is $10 general admission, but some table seating up front is available for $60 for four seats. Call (830) 693-9996.

And also Sunday, all the original members of one-time Austin fixtures Rabbit will reunite at Threadgill's World Headquarters at 6 p.m. Guests include David Murray, Andy Salmon, Tommy Taylor and David Moerbe. Musicians know Rabbit drummer David Cotton as a talent buyer for Threadgill's, the Saxon Pub, Antone's and Momo's. The show is part of Rabbit musical director Walter Talley's 50th birthday. Families are encouraged to attend this early show . . . Austin metal titans At All Cost's new album, "Circle of Demons," hits stores July 31 on noted metal indie label Century Media . . . ST-37, Austin's long-running space rock/psych concern, has re-released the band's first cassettes, 1987's "Billygoat Nothinghead" EP and 1988's "Feature Silica Vicarious," on one CD-R. It's called "Vicarious Billygoat." Check out www.st-37.com for details.
