Happy 75th, Willie!
The big day is here and we're celebrating with all things Willie Nelson, including an online video birthday card
AMERICAN STATESMAN STAFF
Wednesday, April 30, 2008
For the past 75 days, Austin360.com has been counting down the minutes, the hours, the days until Willie Nelson turns 75.
Those numbers are all at zero today, as Austin's ambassador to the world hits the landmark birthday. Willie and family are on tour in Europe, where they played a birthday concert in Copenhagen, Denmark, on Tuesday night. Although April 30 is the date on his birth certificate, Nelson claims April 29 as a birthday because his cousin Mildred, who was at the birth and named the baby Willie Hugh, says he actually was born a few minutes before midnight on April 29, 1933. Maybe Willie just likes those numbers better — four plus 29 equals 33 — but we'll go with the public record.
Willie can't be here in person, but in Austin the birthday celebration culminates from 8 to 11 tonight when such acts as Patty Griffin, Ruthie Foster, Bob Schneider, Carolyn Wonderland and Alejandro Escovedo perform Willie Nelson songs in the studio at KGSR. The concert will be broadcast live on FM 107.1.
Do something nice for someone today or, as Bruce Robison will sing on KGSR tonight, ask yourself "What Would Willie Do?"
